San Diego Family Fun Weekend Guide May 20-22

"I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth." - 3 John 4

Discovering San Diego - There isn't a whole lot going on around this weekend in San Diego, and rumor has it that those rain clouds might make another stop. So I thought I would share with you some other San Diego gems that can be enjoy almost anytime.

The National City Train Depot: SDERA operates the historic National City Depot as a museum that is open Thursday to Sunday from 9 am to 5 pm. Admission is a suggested donation of $5 for adults only. The donation is suggested, but not required. This lovely Santa Fe station (California Southern Railway when it was first constructed) was the first terminus of transcontinental rail travel in the San Diego area.  It is the oldest railroad-related structure still standing in San Diego County, and it is in its original location. A large model-railroad exhibit, operated by the 3-Rail model railroad group, is also included in the museum displays. Not to mention the amazing collection of old San Diego trolleys. All train buffs, local historians, and people looking for an interesting "day out" in the San Diego area are encouraged to visit the depot. www.sdera.org

The San Diego Firehouse Museum: The San Diego Firehouse Museum is open Thursday - Sunday and is located in the Little Italy section of downtown San Diego.  Inside the museum, visitors will see firefighting memorabilia dating back 100 years.  Everything from fire buckets to early firefighting apparatus is on display.  Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for children/seniors.  There is a gift shop with firefighting apparel for sale. www.sandiegofirehousemuseum.com

FRIDAY 5.20.2011

Friday is National Bike to Work Day. If you are able to, bike to school with the kids. School is their work, so why not. If need to, have mom follow a few minutes later with the car, so that you can bring all the bikes back. Or if you can, lock the bikes up and meet the kids after school for an afternoon ride home. And if your off on Friday, simply take the kids out for a bike ride anyways.
Friday Night Movie in the Park (South Bay Recreation Center) Begins at Dusk -  Going out to the movies can get a bit expensive. Especially with all the up-charges for IMAX and 3D. But this Friday you and the kids can catch a great movie absolutely FREE. Bring your blanket, pillow and chairs to the Robert Egger Sr. South Bay Recreation Center at 1885 Coronado Ave, and enjoy the hilarious voice talent of Steve Carell in DESPICABLE ME!
And if you have some older kids...there's some new Disney Pirate movie that comes out. lol! But I wouldn't suggest it for the little ones.

SATURDAY 5.21.2011 Armed Forces Day
24th Annual Jack in the Box "Hoops at the Beach" 2-Day Event - It's the largest 3-on-3 basketball tournament in San Diego. Many mini-courts are set up to accommodate players of all ages in half-court basketball games. There's also a slam dunk contest, free throw contest, and a 3-point shootout. You can form a team and play or sit back and watch the playoffs. There is a cost of if you want to register to play ball, but it is FREE to come and watch. The Jack in the Box "Munchie Mobile" will also be on site offering food, games and prizes. For more information on playing in the event CLICK HERE
23rd Annual Tierrasanta Patriot's Day 10am -9pm - Celebrate Armed Forces Day by watching a patriotic parade in Tierrasanta starting at Serra Mesa high School. The parade features the Serra High School band, youth sports leagues, community groups, ROTC unit, floats, dignitaries, clowns, and horses. After the parade head over to the Tierrasanta Recreation Center for some tasty BBQ dinner under a shaded canopy while listening to pleasant music. Seaworld Viva La Musica Stage Prince Royce - Geoffrey Royce Rojas, known professionally as Prince Royce, is an American singer- songwriter, musician and record producer from New York. He debuted in early 2010 with the release of his eponymous studio album, which includes hit singles "Stand by Me" and "Corazón Sin Cara." Prince Royce recorded a song with Sergio George called "El Campo de Sueños," which is used as the theme song for Domingo de Grandes Ligas on ESPN.
SUNDAY 5.22.2011

18th Annual Sicilian Festival 10am - 6pm - Head down to Little Italy for a celebration of Sicilian-Italian American heritage offering a mixture of ethnic music, food, beer, wine, and dancing. There will also be unique art and craft items. Little Italy is the perfect place for this event. Bring a friend. You're sure to have a good time. If you get there early, you can even catch this weeks Spring Stickball league. They will be playing on Columbia Street (between Cedar St. & Beech St.) and also on India Street (between Ash St. & A St.)

Sunday Organ Concert 2pm -3pmIf you happen to be at Balboa Park on a Sunday afternoon, you'll hear beautiful sounds of music drift through the park. It's performed by Civic Organist Carol Williams who is seated before the majestic piped organ at the Organ Pavilion presenting wonderful selections of music for all to hear. ** I have suggested this event before, and I encourage you to check it out before it is too late. San Diego council is planning on cutting all funding for this event due to the cities continued shortfall with our budget.

Seaworld Viva La Musica Stage El Gran Combo - Few salsa groups have made it untouched through almost half a century, staying above fluctuations in the music industry. The secret is simple: write songs about everyday topics with a good beat and keep your Puerto Rican roots.
