FAMILY FUN IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA!

This weeks family fun idea is great for a quick not so far day trip and comes to us from our Orange County neighbors. If you have ever driven up the 5 freeway through the Irvine area, you may have seen a giant orange balloon floating right of the freeway. For a long time I could not figure out what it was, until one day I googled "orange county balloon" and stumbled across something great!

Built on an old abandoned airfield, the Orange County Great Park is known as the first great metropolitan park of the 21st century. The park is filled with multi-purpose recreation fields, bike and jog trails, picnic meadows, a carousel and of course the major attraction, the Great Park Balloon. The best part about the park...everything is FREE.

If you have recently been to the San Diego Safari Park and seen their giant balloon (which I might add, cost $20 per person to ride), the Orange County park is the exact same type of balloon. With the ability to hold up to 30 passengers, the balloon soars up to 400 feet above the surrounding landscape. The view is magnificent and serves as a public observation deck for the entire park development progress. The balloon runs two different shifts Thursday - Sunday. 9am-3pm and then again from 7pm-10pm. The flights are on first come first serve basis, so it's always good to arrive early. And again...this is completely FREE and is open to all ages.

This Weekend at the Orange Country Great Park:

Saturday 4.2.2011: Movies In The Park - Enjoy a free movie in the park with the family. This Saturday at 8pm The OCGP presents "How to train your dragon". Be sure to bring your lawn chairs and blankets!

FAMILY FUN IN SAN DIEGO

This week, beside the weekend events, I want to share with you 2 other things to do in San Diego that can be done any time of the week.

It’s always fun to play tourist in your own backyard. It’s even more fun if you can play at a discount! The Old Town Trolley Tours and the Seal Sea & Land tour are both must do attractions in San Diego.

The Trolley tour offers an all day hop on & off tour throughout San Diego’s historic Old Town, Downtown, Balboa Park and even Coronado Island. If you love San Diego as much as I do, you will enjoy learning about the history of our town as you discover and enjoy the 100 + points of interest.

The second tour meets and boards at Seaport Village. Your kids will be so excited to see that your tour bus is a giant boat on wheels. They’ll be even more excited when the land and sea tour drives right into the bay. That’s right! The Sea Lion tour takes you on a fun little tour of downtown and the San Diego seaport. You then head out to Shelter Island where your tour bus will drive right into the water and then just like that, become your boat. The tour takes you out into the bay, past North Island to visit our resident California Seals. For more information on either tour, visit their official website HERE

Now for the best part…DISCOUNTS!

Both of these tours are fun, but they are not free. But here is a special treat for local residents. Both tours offer what is called the “Hometown Pass”. The Hometown pass allows for 1 adult to ride free with every paid adult. This is perfect for taking out of town relatives. All you have to do prior to purchasing tickets (I suggests several days before) is visit http://www.hometownpass.com/ and sign up. You’ll be able to print your pass and you are good to go.

If you’re still not convinced about this tour…here’s another benefit. I, along with the tour company, am so confident that you will have so much fun, that the tour company backs every single tour with a 100% MONEY BACK GUARANTEE. That’s right! If you go out and are completely tortured by the tour and have absolutely no fun whatsoever, you can come back home, contact the company’s customer service and get a 100% refund, no questions asked. But I know you and the kids will have fun. And regardless of the kind of financial hardships we all face, I know you’ll be honest if you decide to ask for your money back.

WHAT'S GOING ON THIS WEEKEND? 3/24-3/27

Weather experts (aka John Coleman) are still unsure what this weekend will bring as far as rain or shine. It seems that every night the forecast changes. One thing is for sure, Mount Laguna still has snow! As of Thursday night, there is about a foot of snow and road conditions have been upgraded to GOOD with no chain requirements, however if the weekend brings rain, I would bring the chains. For the best, most up to date conditions, check out the SDCountyDPW facebook page.

Remember if you park anywhere on the mountain, an "Adventure Pass" or "Recreation Pass" is required to be displayed on your dashboard. Passes can be purchased for $5 per day, or $40 for a season pass. Don't take any chances! The fix-it ticket from highway patrol is way more than the $5 adventure pass.

San Diego Recreation Passes are available at

Starting Friday March 18 guest can participate in building the mural by completing a lego tile that will then be placed on the mural. The mural is estimated to take about 4 to 5 days to complete depending on how many people visit the park these next few days. If you visited the Disney D23 Expo back in 2009, you might remember that a similar mural was done for that event as well. To the below are pictures of the D23 Expo mural to give you an idea of what's in store.

SATURDAY 3.12.11

St. Patrick's Day is most commanly know these days to be an Irish drinking holiday. In San Diego it might be know as the holiday in which the Gaslamp Districk is turned green and hundreds of drunk people run around saying "Kiss Me, I'm Irish!". But what many people don't know is that St. Patrick's Day is really about how the Gospel was brought to the island of Ireland. Also very interesting is how the three-leafed clover was used to illustrate the doctrine of the Trinity. If you would like to read more about the true story of Saint Patrick, CLICK HERE and share this story with your children

St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Irish Festival: Although St. Patricks Day is not until next week Thursday, the Irish Congress of Southern California is celebrating this weekend with their anuual Parade and Festival. After the parade you and your family can hang out at the Irish Festival an experience traditional Irish food and music.

Cannon Battles on the Bay: The last time I suggested this event we ended up having rain storms back to back. This weekend should be a perfect time to check out the thrilling cannon battle reenactments between tall ships, Californian and Amazing Grace. 12:30-3:30 pm

**If watching from the shore line is not close enough to the battle for you, the San Diego Maritime Museum offers tickets to ride out on the bay on the tall ships. CLICK HERE for more information.

84th Annual Thursday Club Rummage Sale 2-Day Event - I'm almost too excited to tell you about this event. While a rummage sale might not sound like family fun, this isn't your ordinary rummage sale. Everyone will love the adventure of finding that great deal. The items you'll find here have been generously donated and collectively gathered all year long for this event. New and gently-used items are sold to benefit local charities. Items can be anything from furniture, appliances, electronics, clothing, or toys. And the prices are very much economy friendly. This event is held at the Balboa Park Activity Center at 2145 Park Blvd. from 9am till 4pm all weekend. Bargins Bargins Bargins! No More Rain Weekend! March 4-6

After 2 weekends of wet weather, we are once again back to our normal picture perfect San Diego weather. And if you're looking for a few family ideas for the weekend, you've come to the right blog!

Saturday March 5, Balboa Park
If you don't mind waking up super early on a Saturday morning, you can start the day off with a nice little family run or walk that has meaning. This Saturday FINISH CHELSEA'S RUN. Starting at 7:30am, hundreds of people will gather in Balboa Park for a 5K run/walk. There is a registration fee of $40 for adults and $20 for kids, and while that might sound a bit expensive, the money raised is a fundraiser for the Chelsea's Light Foundation's Sunflower Scholarship Fund.

If running is not your thing, or if the registration fee is a bit much, it's always fun to line the race route and cheer on those that are running. For information on the event, visit Finish Chelsea'sRun 5K Run Walk

63rd Annual Kite Festival
Also on Saturday is one of the oldest festivals in San Diego. The 63rd annual Ocean Beach Kiwanis Kite Festival is a FREE event held on the first Saturday of March every year. The Kite Festival is located on Santa Monica Ave. between Sunset Clifss Blvd. and Ebers St. The festival runs from 9am-4pm and features free kite making for all the kids with prizes for the best decorated kites, a street fair, a parade and fun carnival rides.

Gold Coast Festivals will host their annual Vista Civil War Re-enactment this weekend. From 10am-5pm on both Saturday and Sunday, guest can relive the sights and sounds of one of our country's greatest moments. Located at the Antique Gas & Steam Engine Museum, you will have the chance to not only watch an epic battle, but also see many different period costumes, historical figures as well as walk among the soldiers camps. The battle re-enactments will take place twice each day at 12 noon and then again at 3pm. Adult tickets are $13, children (5-11) are $6 and under age 5 is free.  All Active Military are free. For more information click here.

While watching a Civil War battle might be great for the little boys in your family, it might not be what your little princess has in mind for her family fun weekend. If so, you'll need to plan an afternoon at the Carlsbad Flower Fields.

My Little Princess
The Flower Fields in Carlsbad officially opened this week for the 2011 season.  This 50 acres of hill side beauty offers something for everyone.  From tractor pulled wagon rides, to historic Poinsettia displays, the fields are not to be missed. If you are looking for a chance to take some great family pictures, this is the perfect opportunity. Every weekend offers something different at the fields, so be sure to check out www.theflowerfields.com before planning your visit.

LegoLand SEAlife, CA
And last but no least, if you are off this coming Wednesday, March 9th, Legoland's aquarium SEAlife is offering free admission for all children age 3-12. You do need a coupon, so click here to print one.

Legoland and SEAlife offer many events throughout the year. I would highly recommend investing into a year pass if at all possible. And like all of the theme park passes that I would ever recommend, Legoland makes it easy with their easy monthly payments. For as low as $10.95 a month you can visit the parks over and over again. One thing that Legoland does that no other theme parks has yet to offer, is "Bring a friend for free" day. Once a member, you will receive Legoland newsletters, and in almost every letter, they have been know to send coupons for free admission for a friend when they are with you. And although I have yet to play in it, Legoland also as a new water park that I've heard is waves of fun.

Well...that's all I have for you this weekend. If you have nothing to do this Sunday morning, I'd like to invite you to a family fun event that happens every Sunday (rain or shine). Come on by and visit SkyLine Church. We have service time for those early risers at 8:15 and 9:30am and if you're like me and love to sleep in, there's even an 11am service. www.skylinechurch.org

What ever you decide on this weekend, make sure you enjoy those blessings we call kids!

***Daddy Challenge: Try to say "I love you" as often as you can to both your kids and your wife. Let me know if it doesn't make them smile.
